Bicheno, on the eastern coast of Tasmania, is a favourite holiday destination, noted for its mild temperatures and sandy, family friendly beaches. Bicheno is noted for its cray fishing fleet. In season, the town's seafood outlets have outstanding fresh crayfish. Fishing is a popular pastime in the area, whether it's off the rocks, in the surf or the estuary or from a boat. Bicheno is also popular with divers. Offshore is Governor Island Marine Reserve and you can take a tour by glass-bottomed boat to view the marine life. Near the town is a fairy penguin colony where evening guided tours to see the returning birds are available in season. At the East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park, you can meet a Tasmanian Devil and other Australian animals and birds. Walking enthusiasts have a wealth of opportunities around Bicheno. The coastal walkway takes a pleasant route through the picturesque foreshore regions and there are some great lookouts nearby. To the North Douglas-Apsley National Park has good bushwalks through rugged terrain covered with dry forest, while Freycinet National Park, south of Bicheno, is renowned for its bushwalks and stunning coastline, particularly Wineglass Bay.
