Bruny Island Explorers Cottages - Bruny Island Tasmania ~ Lunawanna

Bruny Island is separated from 'mainland' Tasmania by a body of water called the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. Bruny Island is not so much one island but two - North Bruny and South Bruny, which are connected by a narrow neck of land, called (surprisingly!) 'The Neck'. To get here, a daily ferry service runs from Kettering (approx 30km south of Hobart). A trip on the ferry 'Mirambeena' is a relaxing start to your stay on this beautiful island. Bruny Island is gifted with rugged coastlines, great ocean beaches for surfing and beach fishing fanatics and the most breathtaking views that you are ever likely to see. Bruny is a bushwalkers delight from the rainforest at Mavista Falls, to the top of Fluted Cape and Cape Queen Elizabeth for more of Bruny's breathtaking views. The Cape Bruny Lighthouse was built in 1836 and spectacular scenery can be seen from it. Bruny is also famous for its fairy penguin and mutton bird (short-tailed shearwater) rookeries. These are easily viewed from the stairway and observation platform at the Neck. During the nesting season (September-February for penguins and September-April for muttonbirds), these fascinating birds can be seen returning to their burrows at dusk.
