Orford is a quiet township on the Prosser River opposite Maria Island. It is a pleasant holiday town located on the Prosser River 81km northeast from Hobart and directly across the water from Maria Island. Orford is easily accessible from Hobart, is a popular holiday destination in summer when people come to surf (the water is cold but the waves are good), fish and go boating in the waters between the town and Maria Island. The views over the Tasman Sea from The Thumbs Lookout are dominated by Maria Island, a national park that lies 20km offshore.
