Located on the Tasman Peninsula in the far south of Tasmania, Port Arthur began operating in 1830 as a timber station. It became a prison settlement for male convicts in 1833. It is a unique piece of Australian history and a must see. The Historic Site has much to reveal for the tourist, including interpretation gallery and over thirty buildings, ruins and restored period furnished homes. There are guided historical walking tours, including a renowned ghost tour and a scenic harbour cruise in the summer.
