NORTH EAST VICTORIA

The High Country region is located in the north-east of Victoria. Bushrangers, including the famous Ned Kelly, are part of the local history in this region. Rich wine growing areas and locally produced cheeses and smallgoods are a feature of towns in the Rutherglen, Wangaratta and Milawa area. Rutherglen is located north of Wangaratta and west of Wodonga, just 10 kilometres from the Murray River at the state border towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa. Rutherglen was originally a gold-mining town, but Rutherglen has since developed into a major wine producing area, with 17 wineries all located within a short drive from the town centre. Wangaratta is centrally located in the northeast of Victoria between Benalla and Wodonga on the main route from Melbourne to Sydney. Wangaratta boasts a number of attractive parks and gardens within the town centre. Wangaratta is Australia's home of jazz with the 'Wangaratta Festival of Jazz' held annually on the weekend before the Melbourne Cup each year. Wangaratta is at the northern end-point of the Great Alpine Road which traverses the Great Dividing Range and passes through the all year round holiday town of Bright, the alpine resort of Mount Hotham, the remote Snowy Mountains town of Omeo, and finally ending up at the large East Gippsland regional city of Bairnsdale, over 300km. Beechworth is part of Victoria's High Country with sensational views, historic villages, Ned Kelly country and "Man from Snowy River" fame. Beechworth is a well-preserved former gold mining town, situated in the north-east of Victoria between Wodonga and Myrtleford, and is a popular detour when travelling along the Great Alpine Road between Wangaratta and Bright. Beechworth features wide streets lined with deciduous trees, which create an intense colourful display in the autumn. The Historic and Cultural Precinct, located in Ford Street, is a major attraction, comprising of the town's old court house, telegraph station, town hall, a museum, and a dark cell which at one time housed the infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly. Milawa is a small town located south-east of Wangaratta on the main road between Myrtleford and Glenrowan. Major attractions include the Brown Brothers Winery with its Epicurean Centre, the Milawa Cheese Company, Milawa Mustards and the Olive Shop. Myrtleford is situated within a major tobacco and hop growing region, on the scenic Great Alpine Road between Wangaratta and Bright. Porepunkah is a small town located on the Great Alpine Road, 6km north-west of Bright and is the gateway to Mount Buffalo and the surrounding national park. Porepunkah overlooks the picturesque Ovens River and is surrounded by forests and scenic mountain ranges. Bright an attractive holiday township, situated on the scenic Great Alpine Road between Porepunkah and Harrietville in the beautiful Ovens Valley. Bright is a popular tourist centre due to its close proximity to the mountain and ski resorts of Mount Buffalo, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, and other natural attractions such as the Alpine National Park and Mount Buffalo National park. Mount Beauty is located in Victoria's high country, at the southern end of the picturesque Kiewa Valley and at the base of the state's highest mountain, Mount Bogong. It is surrounded by the Alpine National Park which features lakes, forests and snowfields, offering visitors scenic backdrops wherever in town they happen to be. Harrietville is a former gold-mining town, located 25km south of Bright on the Great Alpine Road and at the base of Mount Feathertop in the scenic Victorian Alps. There is affordable unit accommodation in Harrietville.

Benalla is situated mid-way between Euroa and Wangaratta on the main road and rail route between Melbourne and Sydney. North-east of Benalla is the Winton Motor Raceway which hosts car, motorcycle and superkart racing. Benalla accommodation consists of motels, caravan camping park and bed and breakfast accommodation.

Mansfield is situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, surrounded by grazing districts and mountain forests. The area is famous for its stunning scenery with a number of movies being filmed in the attractive mountain ranges. Mansfield is the closest major town to Australia's largest ski resort of Mount Buller and the largely undeveloped resort of Mount Stirling. Within a short drive of Mansfield are natural attractions such as Lake Nillahcootie to the north and Lake Eildon with its surrounding national park. Access to Lake Eildon from Mansfield is available 20km west of the town at Brankeet Inlet near Bonnie Doon. Alternatively, several small communities are situated on the shores of the lake south of Mansfield at Howes Creek, Goughs Bay and Macs Cove. Alpine Region - Located in this region are a number of major alpine and ski resorts including Mount Buller, Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham with its airport, which offers direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney during the snow season.
